There are two main types of cockroach found in the UK - German and Oriental. Most common
is the German Cockroach which is smaller than the Oriental, 10-15mm long rather than 20-
25mm. Cockroaches will feed on almost anything and are responsible for the spread of
diseases such as dysentery, gastroenteritis, typhoid and polio. Female cockroaches lay their
eggs within egg capsules which resemble small brown purses. They can produce up to eight
of these, each containing thirty eggs at monthly intervals. These pests are controlled by laying
down an insecticidal gel which is a slow acting poison - this not only kills the cockroach that
eats the gel, but because they are carnivorous, it will also kill other cockraches that
subsequently eat the dead one
